Buffalo, N.Y. -- Mark Lesinski, Owner and President at Landmark Strategy Group, LLC, is a volunteer with FeedMore WNY, a nonprofit organization dedicated to feeding neighbors in need across Western New York. The organization encompasses both a food bank and the area Meals on Wheels program. Mr. Lesinski joined in a warehouse packing day on December 22nd to package holiday meals for the homebound this holiday season.

Hands-On Assistance

Volunteers were responsible for packaging 20-pound meal bags to be delivered via the Meals on Wheels program, which delivers thousands of meals directly to homes across all of Buffalo and Western New York. The crew also gift-wrapped FeedMore hand sanitizer wipes to be placed in the delivery bags to help make sure everyone has a safe and healthy holiday season.

The Buffalo area is a hidden gem in so many ways, but there are also plenty of needs like anywhere else. After the higher-than-average job losses we saw here over the past couple of years, we believe that we bear a responsibility as community members to invest back into our area where we can. This organization is doing amazing things on a daily basis and we’re happy to lend a hand,” shared Mark Lesinski.

Pandemic Recovery in Western NY

According to the New York Fed, job losses related to the pandemic were much more severe in Buffalo and the state of New York than in general across the country, partly due to a stricter policy approach by the state. 2020 saw a historic plunge in regional business activity. While recovery is underway, the need for nonprofit organizations to help fill in the gaps for food-unstable families and individuals is even more pronounced now than in pre-pandemic years.

The Homeless Alliance of Western New York also conducted a survey measuring homelessness in June 2020 as compared to the year before. The survey saw a 49% increase in families in homeless shelters and disproportionately larger numbers of homeless in Niagara Falls and Buffalo’s East Side, as those areas were already more financially vulnerable to the job losses caused by the pandemic. This is another reason why nonprofit organizations such as Feedmore WNY have been and continue to be so important to the area.

FeedMore WNY is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to offering dignity, hope, and a brighter future by providing nutritious food, friendship, and skills training to its Western New York neighbors in need. The organization was formed as a merger of the Food Bank of WNY and Meals on Wheels for Western New York. By coming together, the community reach, resources, and impact were increased to feed more community members of all ages throughout Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Niagara counties.
