The Canadian government, which has put off any talk of bank mergers until after the next election, also opposes mergers between the big banks and insurance companies, Prime Minister Paul Martin said recently.


“In terms of banks and insurance companies coming together, right now certainly our position would be against cross-pillar mergers,” Martin said in New York on Thursday. A transcript of his remarks was made available to Reuters on Tuesday.
