The fourth-quarter earnings period for top U.S. companies should finish above analysts’ earlier expectations, largely because of energy’s strong performance, while forecasts for the first quarter show more double-digit gains.


Fourth-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies are now expected to rise 14 percent from a year ago, compared with forecasts of 12 percent earlier in the period, according to data compiled by Reuters Estimates.
