In order to comply with the terms set forth in a suit against Catholic Healthcare West filed in San Francisco Superior Court last year, the California-based Catholic Healthcare plans on providing both full and partial refunds to tens of thousands of patients. According to a San Francisco Chronicle story, the non-profit hospitals involved were accused of overcharging the uninsured.

The settlement still requires a judge?s approval. With that approval, Catholic Healthcare could potentially be out hundreds of millions of dollars. Catholic Healthcare could not estimate the cost of the settlement, but announced plans to send notices to about 700,000 former patients. The company denied any wrongdoing.
