Per-Se Technologies, the Connective Healthcare leader that helps physicians, pharmacies and hospitals realize their financial goals, today announced that Emergency Service Physicians PC (ESP) has outsourced its accounts receivable management to Per-Se for the group’s operations at two Exempla Healthcare hospitals in the Denver area. ESP is one of the largest emergency physician groups in Colorado, with 38 physicians, 16 physician assistants and one nurse practitioner.

Under the three-year agreement, Per-Se will handle coding, billing, documentation feedback, education and electronic reporting for ESP at the emergency departments of Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge and Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette. The two hospitals collectively average about 95,000 emergency room visits annually. Per-Se will also assist ESP with managed care contracting practices.

Steve Doerr, M.D., billing and contracting officer for ESP, said a key factor in the decision to select Per-Se was positive feedback from existing Per-Se clients in and around the state of Colorado. “Across the board, we received nothing but excellent references from colleagues who are presently working with Per-Se,” Doerr said. “We were also very impressed with the range of financial reporting that Per-Se provides to physician practices. These reports are vital tools that can help us manage our organization more effectively.”

Dr. Doerr cites Per-Se’s level of customer service as another factor in their decision to outsource to Per-Se. “Although we were initially hesitant about going with a national healthcare services and technology solutions company, Per-Se has been very accessible and responsive,” he said.

Dr. Doerr also said that Per-Se’s assistance with payer contracting will be particularly useful in the current managed care environment to help the group get paid according to their payer contracts. Overall, Dr. Doerr anticipates that the combined efficiencies, resources and expertise that Per-Se offers will result in significant revenue gains for the practice over time.

Pat Leonard, president, Physician Solutions with Per-Se, said new clients like ESP benefit from Per-Se’s extensive knowledge and experience in serving emergency physicians and emergency departments nationwide.

“Because Per-Se fully understands the challenges and opportunities facing emergency medicine today, it’s able to develop effective strategies for optimizing the revenue cycle,” he said. “We’re looking forward to helping improve the profitability of practices like Emergency Service Physicians and continuing to expand our physician relationships in the Colorado market.”
