U.S. consumer confidence appears to have been severely damaged by the aftermath of the two hurricanes that hit the Gulf Coast in August and September, the Conference Board said Tuesday.

The consumer confidence index fell to 85.0 in October from a revised 87.5 in September. Read full survey.


The decline was unexpected. Economists had forecast the index to increase to 88.2, according to a survey conducted by MarketWatch.
