Colorado State Rep. Jim Welker, the Loveland Republican who came under fire for forwarding a racially charged e-mail last month, now faces the prospect of a congressional investigation of his Internet business.

The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce wants to see records and interview employees at Welker’s Universal Communications Co., according to a letter from committee Chairman Joe Barton, R-Texas.

The congressional request is part of the committee’s inquiry into “data broker” websites that “acquire and sell consumers’ personal cellphone records and other personal data, without the knowledge or consent of the owners of those cellphone numbers,” according to the letter.
