The Service Employees International Union’s Local 1199 has for years been calling attention to what it considers heavy-handed collection practices at Yale-New Haven hospital in Connecticut. The campaign culminated this week in a concession by hospital officials to allow Local 1199 to hold an organization among 1,800 employees in exhange for the union backing off of the campaign that has delayed the construction of a $430 million cancer center.


Hosptial executives in Boston are now bracing for a battle with the union as it sets its eyes on teaching hospitals in Massachusetts.
