The man accused of murdering collection agency executive J.P. Kelso appeared in a Denver courtroom Wednesday. In court records filed by Denver police, it was revealed that Timothy Boham shot Kelso after a botched robbery attempt.

According to a police affidavit, Boham told relatives that he accidentally shot Kelso when the two began to fight after Boham demanded Kelso open the safe in his home. Boham told his family that he believed there was between $100,000 and $400,000 in the safe. Ultimately, Boham gained entry into the safe where he discovered it was empty.

It was also revealed that Boham?s mother and sister helped authorities track him to the U.S.-Mexican border in Arizona where he was apprehended. Also, police had a conversation with Boham on his cell phone where he admitted to shooting Kelso in a failed robbery attempt.

Boham?s family said that he planned on using the money to travel with his girlfriend to South America.

In court yesterday, Boham waived the reading of the charges against him and a preliminary hearing was set for January.

Police records also confirmed that Kelso suffered a gunshot wound to his head.
