A bill before a House subcommittee could make it more difficult for divorced fathers to work an angle that will lower their child support payments; or, according to critics, will make it even tougher for fathers to receive fair consideration in divorce proceedings, according to a story in the online publication 2theAdvocate.com.

House Bill 315 would allow individual judges to decide whether to grant shared custody, and give the parents the ability to set a six-month trial period. Previously, some fathers had been able to exploit a misinterpretation of shared custody rules, claiming that they deserve more time with their children and are therefore entitled to lower child support payments. The new bill effectively tightens that particular loophole.
