Since last August, Canada Revenue Agency ? the Canadian equivalent to the IRS ? has quietly taken over the role as government debt collector, according to the CanWest News Service.


The tax collector has been collecting other debts such as student loans, insurance plans and retirement programs. Human Resources and Development Canada formerly had the job of collecting such debts, but now Canada Revenue is stepping in. About 450 collectors have even been transferred from HRD to Canada Revenue.
