On May 28, 2010, fifty children from the Kansas towns of Princeton, Richmond, Garnett, and Greely participated in a free, all day baseball camp with both breakfast and lunch provided by National Recovery Service of Ottawa, Kansas.  The camp was sponsored by National Recovery Service and hosted by Brad DeKraai, a former Brewers baseball player and current president of National Recovery Service.

DeKraai, who has held similar events in the past, was excited to have the opportunity to share his knowledge and passion for the game with the rural youth.  When Thomas Conway and Ryan Schaub of Princeton, Kansas shared the need for a baseball camp in the area, DeKraai did not hesitate to make this idea a reality.  Conway and Schaub assisted with the not only the planning; but also the camp activities.  For further camp day reinforcements, DeKraai recruited the Overland Park “Brewers”;  a baseball team of Holy Cross students that he has coached for the last nine years.

The action-packed day was full of baseball drills, offense activities, discussions and batting practice; ending with a finale of baseball games.  The participants were split up into age appropriate teams to put what they had learned to use.

All fifty participants left with more than just a great day dedicated to baseball.  National Recovery Service donated enough bats, gloves, catcher’s protective gear, and other miscellaneous items to send everyone home with something to commemorate the day and encourage continued practice.

National Recovery Service has a strong reputation for giving back to their local community.  With donations to such organizations as American Red Cross, school districts, KVC, and the local Youth Action Council; it is evident they want to make a difference in  their community.
