Canada is ready to consider mergers among banks and should set up a clear vetting process to consider such proposals, Conservative Finance Critic Monte Solberg said on Friday.
The Liberal government scotched two bank merger proposals in 1998 when Prime Minister Paul Martin was finance minister, and they have grappled with how to treat such unions ever since. Martin said earlier this month that the time may be right for big mergers in the financial sector.
