Portfolio Recovery Associates earns its living buying packages of defaulted debt for a few pennies on the dollar, then trying to collect on them.


Prying that money loose is hard enough. Making things doubly tough is the fact that the industry has such low barriers to entry. Debt collection ain’t exactly biotechnology, so there’s loads of competition — including four other publicly traded companies.


Still, there’s plenty of money to be made in a nation with some $2 trillion in consumer debt.
