A steady stream of revenue for many a county prosecutor is going dry.


For years, county prosecutors have collected fees on every hot check written at Wal-Mart and every other retailer that makes it to their desks. The fees can amount to tens of thousands of dollars in some counties. But, Wal-Mart announced plans last month to go with TeleCheck Services Inc., a private national collection agency, effectively depriving prosecutors of the fees.


TeleCheck, a subsidiary of First Data Corp., will be the primary provider of check-collection services for Wal-Mart’s discount, Supercenter and Sam?s Club stores.
