Sallie Mae, the nation’s No. 1 paying-for-college company, today announced that Northern Virginia Family Service has selected the Reston-based employer for the Companies as Responsive Employers (CARE) Award.

Northern Virginia Family Service cited Sallie Mae’s comprehensive benefits package, adoption assistance program, flexible work schedules, and child care referral service among the reasons for the award. Sallie Mae was one of two winners under the “Large Company” category.

“Our employees are our most important asset,” said Joni Reich, senior vice president, Administration. “When employers view work and family balance as a serious consideration, they enable employees to thrive. We are pleased to be recognized as having a workplace that promotes a healthy work-life balance.”

The CARE Awards program was established in 1992 to recognize companies that lead the field in family-friendly benefits for employees and that demonstrate a commitment to helping employees maintain a healthy work and life balance. Northern Virginia Family Service selected the winners based on a review of applications, site visits and employee responses to a Web-based survey.
