Rumors of the telegram?s death may have been vastly overstated.



Telegrams are starting to be used by New Zealand businesses ? including debt collectors ? as a novel and quick way to get consumers? attention.



New Zealand?s telegram program ended in 1999 due to lack of demand and the increased reliance on e-mail. However, the idea of sending telegrams in pursuit of a debt became interesting to Kiwi businesses partly because of their eye-catching novelty, and also as an effective means of reaching consumers.



Modern telegrams are more advanced, with less of that ?STOP? business, and not so much with the clickety-click from the old timey movies. They?re also not available to the general public. And depending on what kind of success rate New Zealand shows with its new program, it?s a trend that just might find its way stateside.
